System Restore is an old Windows feature that’s been
available since Windows Millenium Edition released in 2000. If you need
to run System Restore in Windows 10, things work a bit differently
compared to older versions.
Previously, there was a way to run System Restore from Accessories
-> System Tools but this shortcut was removed starting with Windows
8.
System Restore is a useful tool when the system starts acting weird
which can happen after updates and/or installing new apps as it can help
you revert the system to a previous point in time that was functioning
properly.
How to run System Restore in Windows 10
Keep in mind this will go back to an older version of settings and
files although you can undo the restore operation if it doesn’t solve
your problems. With that said, here’s what you need to do is you want to
run System Restore in Windows 10:
Open the Start Menu and click the Power button. Press and hold the
SHIFT key and click the “Restart” option while still holding the SHIFT
key.
The system will reboot and enter recovery mode. In the menu that appears, select Troubleshoot then Advanced boot options.
In the Advanced Options menu, select “System Restore”. The system will be restarted again.
Then, you will need to select an account, enter your password and click “Continue”.
This will launch the System Restore wizard. Now you just need to
choose one of the existing restore points and click the Next button. The
system will roll back to the selected restore point.
It’s also possible to run System Restore in Windows 10 from System
Properties. To use this method open the Run dialog (press Win key + R)
and type “SystemPropertiesProtection” without quotes in the text field
then hit the OK button.
The
System Properties window will open in the System Protection tab. Click
the “System Restore…” button and the System Restore Wizard will launch.
There’s also a way to directly launch the System Restore Wizard.
Press Win +R to bring up the Run box and type “rstrui” without quotes in
the text field then press OK or hit Enter on your keyboard.
