Change drag and drop sensitivity in Windows 10

Change drag and drop sensitivity in Windows 10

Drag and drop is a feature that allows you to select files and folders and “drag” them with your mouse to a different folder or a supporting app. If you want to change drag and drop sensitivity in Windows 10, it’s certainly possible and might prevent accidental file moving operations.
This is true especially if you have a touchpad, but even those who use a mouse might consider changing the default settings since they require dragging just a few pixels.

How to change drag and drop sensitivity in Windows 10

By default, the system is set to perform the drag and drop action if you drag a file or folder at least 4 pixels which isn’t a lot and can leave room for accidental move operations.
Technically, there’s no built-in option that would allow us to change drag and drop sensitivity in Windows 10 but it can be done with a simple Registry tweak.
The new value you’re going to choose depends entirely on your preferences but ideally, it should be higher than 10 pixels. With that said, here’s how to change drag and drop sensitivity in Windows 10 (this method also works for Windows 7 and 8):
Right-click the Start button and select Run from the context menu. In the Run box type “regedit” and hit Enter on your keyboard.
This will open the Registry Editor. There, navigate to the following Registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

As shown in the image above, the DragHeight and DragWidth values displayed in the right panel are set to 4 pixels each. To change the drag and drop sensitivity you will need to modify them.
To do this, double-click on DragHeight, set the new Value data (keep in mind these are pixels) and click OK. Do the same for the DragWidth registry key.
To apply the changes you will need to sign out and then log back into your user account. Since this might be inconvenient, a quicker solution that also makes the changes take effect is to restart the Explorer Shell. You can do this by pressing and holding Ctrl + Shift and while still holding the two keys, right-click on an empty area of the taskbar. Then, select “Exit Explorer” from the context menu.
