Windows 10 comes with a comprehensive collection of new and useful features although there are still some old ones that are appreciated these days.
Windows XP brought the Quick Launch bar which lets us easily access our most important files and applications directly from the task bar. Surprisingly, it’s possible to get the XP Quick Launch bar in Windows 10.

How to get the XP Quick Launch bar in Windows 10

The Quick Launch bar was removed after the release of Windows 7 although there are still many users who find this feature both practical and convenient. While it’s not a feature you can enable with one click, it is possible to get the XP Quick Launch bar in Windows 10.
You might think the Quick Launch bar is an old and outdated feature but it still provides some unique benefits. For instance, you can customize it to include files, folders, and apps.
It also shows all running apps to the right so you can tell them apart from the offline programs. Regarding customization, you can also resize the pinned icons and Quick Launch will automatically adjust the spacing between them.

To begin with, you’ll need to create a new toolbar. Right-click on a blank area on the taskbar and navigate to Toolbars -> New Toolbar in the context menu.

In the following window, you’ll be prompted to select a folder for the new toolbar. Copy and paste the path below into the address bar and click on “Select Folder”.

You should now have the Quick Launch bar on the right side of the taskbar, next to the notification and network icons.
In XP, the Quick Launch bar was located on the left side, next to the Start button. If you want it as close as possible as the original, here’s how you can move it.

Right-click on a blank space on the taskbar and disable the “Lock the taskbar” option. This will allow you to drag the Quick Launch bar to the left.

You’ve probably noticed there is no Quick Launch icon – just the title. To make it look as similar as possible to the old XP Quick Launch, right-click on the Quick Launch bar and deselect “Show text” and “Show title” in the menu. This won’t bring the icon back but it will make the Quick Launch bar take up less space on the taskbar and appear clean.
You can add any item by dragging it until the “Add to Quick Launch” message is displayed.
Also, it’s possible to remove the Quick Launch bar at any time. Right-click on a blank area of the task bar and in the context menu go to Toolbars and deselect “Quick Launch”.
